Vol. 563 No. 5

Written Answers - Job Creation.

Joe Costello

Question:

132 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs the progress which has been made with regard to the examination by his Department of the report of the working group on the creation of employment in the Gaeltacht; if the Government is committed to implementing the recommendations made by the group; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8313/03]

My Department is continuing to actively examine the recommendations of this report to determine how they can be most effectively implemented. To date, discussions have taken place with the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism regarding tourism development in the Gaeltacht which would encompass the need to protect the Irish language. The question of attracting new knowledge-based industries to the Gaeltacht has also been taken up with the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment. Also arising from the report, Údarás na Gaeltachta has put together an action plan to tackle the significant unemployment problem in the north-west Donegal Gaeltacht and is currently in the process of establishing a committee to oversee implementation of this action plan.
