Vol. 564 No. 2

Written Answers - Possession of Weapons.

Paul Kehoe

Question:

139 Mr. Kehoe asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the action he or his Department has taken since he received correspondence in reference to a person (details supplied) in County Wexford; the steps he intends to take in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9188/03]

Following the Deputy's recent correspondence to my office regarding an individual who was recently stopped by the Welsh police and cautioned over the possession of a knife, I asked the consul general in Cardiff to raise this case with the relevant authorities. The Tenby police explained that lock flick knives are listed as prohibited weapons in Britain. As a consequence, and in accordance with UK law, the individual was formally cautioned about his possession of such a weapon and samples were taken of his fingerprints and DNA. I understand that a record of this caution remains on the British police national computer for five years and that, unless some different police issue arises for the individual, it should not cause him any difficulty travelling to Britain.
