Vol. 564 No. 3

Written Answers - Tobacco Sales.

Richard Bruton

Question:

181 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that discount price cigarettes are being actively marketed via e-mail at ?4.25 by a company (details supplied); and if he can take action on public health policy grounds to limit such activity. [9254/03]

Price is an effective means of protecting children against experimenting with cigarettes and becoming addicted and in encouraging smokers to quit. The company referred to by the Deputy is based outside the State. Cigarettes purchased outside the State and imported may be subject to excise and/or other duties and this is a matter for the Customs and Excise authorities.
