Vol. 564 No. 3

Written Answers - School Curriculum.

Joe Costello

Question:

42 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the action he has taken to ensure that the Department of Education and Science will incorporate a module in the school curriculum on food safety, foods labelling and related issues; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8863/03]

One of the recommendations of the food labelling group which reported to me in December 2002 stated that as part of its overall policy, the Department of Education and Science should incorporate a module on food safety-labelling-consumer issues into the primary and secondary school curricula. This recommendation has been brought to the attention of the Department of Education and Science and I understand that that Department forwarded it to the National Council for Curriculum Assessment. Under the Education Act 1998, the NCCA is the statutory body with responsibility for advising the Minister on the contents of the curriculum.
