Vol. 564 No. 3

Written Answers - Food Safety Standards.

Joan Burton

Question:

76 Ms Burton asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he has plans to introduce legislation to require labelling of foods in the catering sector; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8860/03]

Matters pertaining to the catering sector fall within the remit of my colleague the Minister of Enterprise, Trade and Employment. However, as a result of concerns expressed by consumers on this and other issues, I established a food labelling group to examine issues surrounding food labelling. This group reported to me in December 2002 and this specific issue was raised in the context of the group's recommendations. I have recently agreed a strategy for the implementation of the recommendations of the group and, to this end, an interdepartmental-agency committee is being set up to monitor the functioning of the strategy.
