Vol. 564 No. 3

Written Answers - Food Industry.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

112 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the discussions he has had to promote Irish food and food products on overseas markets; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9423/03]

I have availed of every opportunity to further the cause of the Irish food industry through promotional events, policy development and various other fora whether formal or informal at national and international level. I have been active in supporting An Bord Bia in its role of promoting Irish food both at home and abroad. An Bord Bia implements a wide range of specialist marketing and promotion activities to enhance Ireland's international profile as a producer of quality food and drink products. The board has seen a marked increase in its budget since 2000 and 14 additional staff have been appointed. This, coupled with sound strategic planning, targeted market analysis and close partnership with food companies, will ensure development of a food industry that is competitive and capable in an increasingly challenging market.
