Vol. 565 No. 2

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Service.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

250 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the extent to which he intends to expand or improve remedial teaching services; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10514/03]

Children with literacy or numeracy problems are catered for by the learning support remedial teacher service. The number of learning support teachers in the primary system has increased from 1,302 in 1998 to 1,531 currently.

At present my Department is reviewing the distribution of learning support provision in all primary schools. The outcome of the review will assist my Department in the future planning of this service. At second level there are approximately 560 learning support teachers. There are no plans to expand the service at present.
