Vol. 565 No. 2

Written Answers. - Public Transport.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

313 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Transport if the necessary capital has been made available to Bus Átha Cliath to facilitate fleet improvements, bus shelters and/or other facilities to meet the targets set by Government for the company; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10553/03]

Since 1999 over €101 million has been made available by the Exchequer and the EU to Bus Átha Cliath for investment in garage facilities, new buses and other facilities to enable the company to expand bus services in the greater Dublin area. Since then, 484 new buses have been purchased by Bus Átha Cliath, 243 of which are additional buses. These buses have improved the quality and reliability of the fleet, as well as providing for increased services. In 2003, Bus Átha Cliath is planning to purchase a further 78 new buses. The provision of bus shelters is a matter for the company itself and Exchequer funding is not provided for it.
