Vol. 565 No. 2

Written Answers. - Science Education Facilities.

Denis Naughten

Question:

24 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science the action he intends to take to upgrade science facilities in post-primary schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10302/03]

The implementation of science subjects in post-primary schools is strongly supported by my Department through the provision of capital funding towards the cost of providing high quality science laboratories and equipment.

It is the case that when providing an entire new school, provision is made for science laboratories at the rate of one laboratory per 200 pupils. Likewise, with an extension project, the condition of existing laboratory provision is assessed as part of the preliminary analysis of need. Where existing provision is deemed to be inappropriate or otherwise inadequate, either a complete refurbishment is undertaken or alternatively, brand new facilities are provided. In the 2003 school building programme alone, the science needs of a significant number of schools are being addressed. The Deputy can be further assured that all science laboratories being provided in post-primary schools are equipped to a high standard.

Recently, grants in excess of €13,000 per school were made available to schools in the free education system that offer one or more of the physical science subjects at senior cycle level towards the purchase of laboratory equipment, including ICT equipment. These grants are in addition to annual per capita grants also made available to schools.
