Vol. 565 No. 2

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

76 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Finance if he will sanction funding for flood alleviation works in the Maynooth, Straffan, Ardclough and Leixlip areas of County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10473/03]

Funding of €1,130,000 was provided in 2002 for works on the Lyreen-Meadowbrook and the Morrell rivers in Kildare. These works are being carried out by the Office of Public Works on behalf of Kildare County Council and €941,000 of this funding has been spent to date. The balance will be expended on works on the Morrell river this year which could not be completed in 2002 because of seasonal factors. No further funding is available to me in the current year for flood relief works in County Kildare.

Reports on proposed flood relief works in Ardclough and Straffan were received from Kildare County Council on 30 January 2003 and are currently being examined by Office of Public Works. In addition, I understand that the county council is in the process of appointing engineers to prepare a report on flooding in the Rye Water and Liffey rivers which impact on Mill Lane, Leixlip. I expect that this report will also be forwarded to Office of Public Works when available.
