Vol. 565 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tax Reliefs.

David Stanton

Question:

80 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Finance if alcohol companies claim tax benefit from sponsorship of sporting organisations; if so, the total amount claimed each year for the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10594/03]

Companies generally are allowed to claim deductions for legitimate business expenses in calculating their profits for tax purposes. This would include the cost of sponsorship of sporting organisations where it constituted promotion or advertising of a company's business.

I am however, informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the information to be furnished with tax returns does not require such expenditure to be identified and the amounts of such claims cannot therefore be quantified.
