Vol. 565 No. 3

Written Answers. - Harbours and Piers.

Eamon Ryan

Question:

252 Mr. Eamon Ryan asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources with regard to the recent development of two piers and a slipway at St. Kieran's and Barrystown within the Bannow Bay special protection area in County Wexford, if these developments require a foreshore licence; if a licence has been applied for these developments; and if not, the procedure that his Department will undertake to rectify the situation. [11013/03]

Development on the foreshore may only be undertaken in accordance with the terms and conditions of a foreshore lease or licence granted pursuant to the Foreshore Acts, 1933 to 1998.

Complaints have been made to my Department that developments have been carried out in Bannow Bay, County Wexford, without the necessary authorisations under the Foreshore Acts. The developments in question are a pier at St. Kieran's and a slipway at Barrystown.
My Department is investigating these matters, and has had discussions with Wexford County Council and Dúchas. Any action taken on foot of these investigations will take full account of the protection and conservation requirements of the Bannow Bay special protection area.
