Vol. 565 No. 3

Written Answers. - Local Authority Funding.

John Perry

Question:

418 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has received a submission in relation to the playground in Tubbercurry, County Sligo; if he will make a statement on correspondence (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11087/03]

My Department has recently received the submission in question and will reply to it shortly. Section 67 of the Local Government Act 2001 empowers local authorities to promote the interests of the local community in relation to amenity, recreation and other func tions (including the incurring of expenditure). This includes the provision of playgrounds and play areas. It is a matter for each local authority to determine the extent to which playgrounds and play areas should be provided and to allocate resources accordingly. My Department does not operate a specific scheme of grants for playground or play area projects but does provide significant financial support to local authorities through the local government fund.
