Vol. 565 No. 4

Written Answers. - Health Awareness Campaign.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

148 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will arrange a public awareness campaign on the dangers of young teenage sex; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11294/03]

In line with key objectives highlighted in the national health promotion strategy 2000-2005, the health promotion unit of my Department supports a range of existing initiatives in the area of young people and sexual health. The relationships and sexuality education, and social, personal and health education programmes in the school setting, the national youth health programme, Too Hot to Handle, which provides training for youth workers on the issue, and the Convenience Advertising campaign are some examples of such initiatives. The latter programme has recently been expanded and, specifically, Convenience Advertising posters can be seen in more youth clubs, entertainment venues, etc. than ever before.

The health promotion unit has commenced the planning stages for a sexual health awareness campaign.
