Vol. 565 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

171 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the public disquiet at the current level of Garda presence at Rosslare Harbour, Ireland's Euro port; if he has any proposals to allocate gardaí to this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11278/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the personnel strength of Rosslare Harbour Garda station as at 14 April 2003 is eight, all ranks. Local Garda management is satisfied that the best use is being made of the resources in Rosslare Harbour. Resources are augmented from within the district-division as required. The area is patrolled by the district detective unit and the divisional traffic unit.

The situation will be kept under review and when additional personnel next become available, the needs of Rosslare Harbour will be fully considered within the overall context of the needs of Garda stations throughout the country. I am further informed that of the eight members allocated to Rosslare Harbour six members are employed primarily on immigration duties. However, these members routinely attend to other police matters in the vicinity of the harbour.
