Vol. 565 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Amalgamation.

Olwyn Enright

Question:

109 Ms Enright asked the Minister for Education and Science the current situation in relation to the amalgamation of two schools (details supplied) in County Offaly and when a deposit will be paid to the La Sainte Union Des Sacres Coeurs, Banagher, for the site; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11327/03]

As indicated in the capital programme for 2003 which is published on my Department's website, the number of sites to be purchased in 2003 will be minimal. The level of funding available for the purchase of sites for primary and post-primary schools will be €5.5 million. Due to the commercial sensitivities of site acquisition, I do not propose at this stage to identify the specific sites to be acquired. However, this information will be placed on the website when the relevant acquisitions have been completed.

With regard to the proposed building project itself, in view of the scale of the capital programme for 2003 and having regard to the level of financial commitments to be met from projects already in construction, I do not envisage that my Department will be in a position during this year to initiate architectural planning for further large scale projects. This includes the proposed project at Banagher. The project will be considered in the context of the 2004 schools building programme.
