Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Insurance Industry.

Finian McGrath

Question:

150 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if insurance companies are refusing to insure property close to the River Tolka while other companies are charging extremely high rates to their customers; and the steps which can be taken to assist the residents on this issue. [11649/03]

My concern in implementing the insurance reform programme is reducing the overall cost of insurance to consumers and business. The pricing and underwriting of insurance is a matter for individual insurance companies and EU law prevents me from intervening directly in the matter. I will, however, refer the particular issue raised by the Deputy to the consumer director of IFSRA who now has responsibility for this area.
