Question:

177 Mr. Boyle asked the Minister for Defence the number of nominations and appointments made by him since 6 June 2002; and the number of and areas where vacancies for such appointments will arise and when. [11862/03]

I assume the Deputy is referring to bodies under the aegis of my Department in respect of which appointments arise through my Department. There are four such bodies. The Civil Defence Board may have up to 14 members, including the chairperson. I have, as Minister for Defence, made 14 appointments to the board since 6 June 2002. The term of office of the current members expires on 5 June 2005.

The board of Coiste an Asgard may have up to 14 directors, in addition to the chairperson. I have, as Minister for Defence, made nine appointments to the board since 6 June 2002. The directors' term of office is five years. There is currently one vacancy and the next anticipated vacancy will arise in October 2003.
There are three board members on the Army Pensions Board, including the chairman. I have, as Minister for Defence, made one appointment to the board since 6 June 2002. There is no specified period of appointment to the Army Pensions Board.
The Central Council of the Irish Red Cross Society includes a minimum of 13 members, including the chairperson, nominated by the Government. There were no appointments made since 6 June 2002. The term of office of the Government nominees expired on 30 April 2003 and all these positions are currently vacant.
