Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tax Yield.

Richard Bruton

Question:

255 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance the average income tax paid by the top 200 wealthiest persons as revealed in recent publications; the estimated average percentage tax as a proportion of gross income; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12394/03]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that they do not maintain statistical data on individuals by reference to the criterion of wealth.

In relation to income, the annual statistical report of the Revenue Commissioners contains among other information data relating to numbers of income recipients within various income ranges and the associated amounts of income and income tax liability within those ranges. A copy of the most recent statistical report for 2001 was placed in the Oireachtas Library.

The Deputy will be aware that in 2002 the Revenue Commissioners carried out a study on the effective tax rates of the top 400 income recipients. A copy of the report of this study is available also in the Oireachtas Library.
