Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Human Rights Abuses.

Dan Boyle

Question:

272 Mr. Boyle asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will give details of the most recent communications which his Department has had with the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria concerning the case of a person (details supplied) condemned to death by stoning under Sharia law. [12376/03]

In August 2002, the Government made known to the federal authorities in Nigeria, though the Nigerian Embassy in Dublin and our embassy in Abuja, its grave concern at the sentence of death by stoning for adultery imposed by a Sharia court in northern Nigeria on the person in question.

Since then, the person in question has lodged an appeal against her sentence and this is due to be heard by the Sharia court of appeal in the State of Katsina on 3 June 2003. Through our embassy in Abuja, we continue to closely monitor this case and to convey our views in all appropriate ways.
