Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Diplomatic Representation.

Denis Naughten

Question:

273 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the action his embassy staff in Germany are taking to assist a person (details supplied) who was viciously assaulted in Stade on 27 April 2003; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12396/03]

The individual mentioned by the Deputy contacted the Irish Embassy in Berlin on 30 April last and explained that he was in hospital in Stade having been attacked while leaving a disco. He confirmed that he had suffered a fractured skull, that he was recovering well and that he expected to be in hospital for a further ten days or so. He further confirmed that his family in Ireland were aware of his hospitalisation and that he has medical insurance. The embassy advised him to report the matter to the police immediately. The embassy has also been in contact directly with the police.

An official from the embassy made further contact and spoke directly with the individual last Friday and he confirmed that he was recovering and is being well looked after. He further confirmed that he is not encountering any language difficulties with the medical staff as he himself speaks German. I understand that he has reported the incident to the police and an officer has come to the hospital to take a statement.

The individual has expressed his appreciation to the embassy for its interest and concern. I can assure the Deputy that the embassy will continue to monitor the case.
