Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Psychological Service.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

286 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science his proposals to provide the 50 training places for clinical psychologists, as recommended by the joint review group on psychologist career structures; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11507/03]

In early 2000, the joint review group on psychology services recommended a significant increase, from less than 20 to approximately 50, in the number of postgraduate training places in order to bring about an improved balance between the supply and demand for professionally qualified clinical psychologists. The three year doctorate of psychological science in clinical psychology, DPsychSc, in Trinity College Dublin is jointly funded by TCD and the Northern Area Health Board. In July 2001, the university reached an agreement with the Northern Area Health Board, which provides for 12 post graduate places per year, increased from six. There are 12 students in year two in the current academic year, with a further 12 students who started year one in January 2003. The three year doctorate of psychological science in clinical psychology in UCD allows for an increased intake from six to ten students per annum for two years, followed by a fallow year. At present, there are ten students in year two, nine in year three and there was no intake in 2002-03 as it is the fallow year. There will be a further intake in 2003-04.

In September 2000, my colleague, the Minister for Health and Children, invited proposals across the health services for the provision of funding for 30 places in 2001-02. As a result, funding in respect of course fees was given to the Psychological Society of Ireland for the running of their part-time postgraduate diploma. NUI Galway will begin a new three year doctorate in clinical psychology programme in September 2003. The proposed intake will be 12 per annum. The new programme has been advertised widely and NUIG has begun its student selection process.
