Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

John Perry

Question:

292 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science the position in relation to the provision of a new school in Killimor, Ballinasloe, County Galway; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11516/03]

Question:

308 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science the position in relation to the provision of a new school in Killimor, Ballinasloe, County Galway. [11630/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 292 and 308 together.

The proposed new primary school in Killimor is listed in section 7 of the 2003 school building programme, which I published on my Department's website at www.education.ie. This proposed project is at an early stage of architectural planning and has been assigned a "band 2" rating by my Department in accordance with the published criteria for prioritising large-scale projects. Projects listed in sections 6 and 7, primary, are not being authorised to progress beyond their current stage of architectural planning for the time being. The timing of when projects listed in these sections can progress to tender and construction will depend on the budgetary allocation for 2004 and subsequent years and the priority afforded to each project be reference to the band rating.

Question:

293 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science his plans regarding Gaelscoil Riabach, Loughrea, where a site has been acquired for the building of a new school; his Department's plans to progress this project to finalisation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11517/03]

Question:

309 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science his plans for Gaelscoil Riabach, Loughrea, County Galway, where a site has been acquired for the building of a new school; and his Department's plans to progress this project to finalisation. [11631/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 293 and 309 together.

The position is that Gaelscoil Riabach was granted provisional recognition in September 2000 and continues to hold provisional status. The question of permanent recognition will be considered when the Department is satisfied that the long-term viability of the school has been demonstrated and that the school is operating in accordance with the rules for national schools. Until such time as permanent recognition is granted, the school will not be considered for capital grant aid either for site acquisition, or for the construction of permanent school accommodation. If and when permanent recognition is granted, budgetary factors will then determine the rate of progress on the delivery of permanent accommodation for the school.

Question:

294 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason he revoked his decision to give permission to purchase a site for the Gaelscoil Uí Cheitearnaigh, Ballinasloe, as per letter of the State Solicitor earlier in 2003; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11518/03]

Question:

310 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science the reasons he revoked his decision to give permission to purchase a site for the Gaelscoil Uí Cheitearnaigh, Ballinasloe, County Galway, as per a letter of the State Solicitor earlier in 2003. [11632/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 294 and 310 together.

Section 9 of the 2003 school building programme as published on my Department's website at www.education.ie sets out the funding allocated for the purchase of sites for primary and post-primary schools. On the basis of the budgetary allocation, it was not possible to make provision for the acquisition of a site for Gaelscoil Uí Cheitearnaigh in 2003. The budgetary allocation for 2004 and subsequent years will determine the rate of progress on projects including site acquisitions that could not be included in this year's programme.
