Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cosmetic Products.

John Gormley

Question:

514 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that aluminium in antiperspirants can have health side effects; and if he has plans to deal with the problem. [12119/03]

The use of aluminium compounds, in particular, aluminium zirconium chloride hydroxide complexes, is subject to control under regulations in force in this country by virtue of the EU directives relating to cosmetic products. The controls in these directives are made, and are frequently updated, by the European Commission following consultation with the EU Scientific Committee on Cosmetic Products and Non-Food Products, SCCNFP.

I have not been made aware of any recent concerns in relation to health side effects in relation to these products. If such concerns were to arise, it would be appropriate that they be referred to the European Commission for examination in consultation with the scientific committee concerned.
