Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Railway Stations.

Fergus O'Dowd

Question:

560 Mr. O'Dowd asked the Minister for Transport the position regarding the proposal to re-open Dunleer railway station in County Louth. [11538/03]

The provision of rail stations and services to them is a day-to-day operational matter for Iarnród Éireann. However, the company has informed me that it has had a number of representations from local residents and developers regarding the possible re-opening of Dunleer station. I recently met a delegation on the issue and made the point to them that local involvement was vital for the re-opening of such stations.

I understand that local developers are prepared to assist Iarnród Éireann financially, if necessary. However, the company informs me that Dunleer has a small population of approximately 1,000 and that the planned housing schemes are small, low-density developments. The demand generated is unlikely to justify the substantial costs of €4 million plus of re-opening the station. Iarnród Éireann has assured me, however, that it will keep the situation under review.
