Question:

564 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Transport the position regarding CIE following the abolition of same; if, in the event of the solvency of the CIE pension funds, he will assume the role of the CIE board and underwrite the pension funds following the abolition of CIE to ensure that there is always money to pay the pensions and benefits given that there are approximately 12,000 staff in CIE and its operating companies and approximately 7,000 pensioners covering both pension schemes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Future pension arrangements are being considered as part of the detailed preparatory work on the restructuring of CIE. The objective of that work is that the current position relating to pension entitlements and pension security should continue to obtain for the future.
