Written Answers. - Rail Safety.

Seán Crowe

Question:

570 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Transport if he will report on the reconvening of the railway safety task force. [11962/03]

The first meeting of the reconvened railway safety task force took place on 11 March 2003. The task force comprises representatives of the Department of Transport, the Department of Finance, CIE and Iárnrod Éireann.

The terms of reference of the task force are: to submit recommendations to Government on a prioritised railway safety programme, covering investment and safety management measures, for the five year period 2004 to 2008, as part of a prioritised railway investment programme, taking account of any decisions by Government on the conclusions and recommendations of the strategic rail review; the outputs of the risk model which will be developed by Iarnród Éireann; and consistent with any financial envelope for public transport agreed by the Departments of Finance and Transport.

The work of the task force is ongoing and it is expected that it will be in a position to make recommendations to Government by late 2003 or early 2004.
