Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Crime Levels.

Michael Ring

Question:

616 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of incidents of crime against the person and of street violence in the city of Galway for 2001 and 2002; and the crime figures nationally for 2002. [11542/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that statistics for Galway city for the year 2002 are not readily available. However, the position in the Galway West division as a whole is as follows:

Galway West Division

Offence Category

2001

2002*

Homicide

1

1

Assault

167

256

*provisional figures
The corresponding overall figures for the State were 3,802 headline assaults in 2001 and 5,688 in 2002. There were 74 homicides in 2001 and 114 in 2002. It should be noted that all figures for 2002 are provisional and are subject to change.
