Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Sentencing Policy.

Joe Costello

Question:

639 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has proposals to increase the rate of remission for good behaviour in prison from one quarter to one third; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11759/03]

The current provision for remission allows that a convicted prisoner may earn remission, by industry and good conduct, on a sentence of greater than one month, provided that the remission so granted does not result in the prisoner being discharged before he has served one month. The standard rate of remission is one quarter of the whole sentence. In the context of the consolidation and modernisation of the prison rules generally, at present under way, the rules governing remission rates are being reviewed. However, it is not proposed to increase the standard rate of remission in the revised rules.
