Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Operations.

Charlie O'Connor

Question:

655 Mr. O'Connor asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the Garda authorities continue to give special attention to the needs of Scoil Santain, Avonmore Road, Tallaght, Dublin 24, in respect of concerns regarding serious vandalism and other problems at the school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11953/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that a report of criminal damage and burglary was made to the Garda following an incident at the school on 9 January 2003. The school management subsequently closed the school for one week to carry out repairs. I understand that local gardaí attended a meeting held on 30 January where similar incidents were outlined by speakers. The meeting was assured by the gardaí that a full Garda investigation would take place into the incident, and that local gardaí would patrol the school and its environs for the foreseeable future. A Garda was nominated to attend meetings of the action group which was established and has attended all meetings of the group since then. I also understand that the local crime prevention officer inspected the school and its environs and advised the school management on how to improve security at the site.

Since January, the area has been patrolled by the Garda, including the mounted and dog units. I understand that the school has significantly improved its security and is now employing a part-time security officer. The investigation into the January incident is continuing and I am informed that the members of the management committee and the principal, teachers and parents have expressed their appreciation of the Garda response to date.
