Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Firearms Regulations.

Michael Noonan

Question:

665 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if it is illegal for a person to hold a calibre larger than .22 long rifle or .22 magnum in semi-automatic format; if so, the applicable section and Act; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12095/03]

I wish to inform the Deputy that firearms certificates may be granted in accordance with the provisions of the Firearms Acts 1925 to 2000. However, under the current firearms licensing policy, certificates for firearms with a calibre in excess of .22 inches may only be granted for certain categories of bolt action rifles not exceeding .270 inches. Semi-automatic rifles of a calibre greater than .22 are not allowed.
