Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Areas of Conservation.

Ciarán Cuffe

Question:

698 Mr. Cuffe asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the location, date of purchase and price paid for any special areas of conservation lands purchased from Coillte or the Lands Commission. [11402/03]

My Department's records show that since 1997, when the EU habitats directive was transposed into Irish law and designation of special areas of conservation, SACs, began, no SAC lands have been purchased from Coillte. When lands are acquired from the Irish Land Commission, the Department of Finance permits the general transfer of such lands free of charge. However, the acquisition is noted in the appropriation accounts of both my Department and the Department of Agriculture and Food.

Since 1997, a total of 256.171 hectares of SAC land has been acquired in fee simple from the Irish Land Commission. Turbary rights only were also acquired from the Land Commission on SAC lands totalling 737.896 hectares. The areas concerned are listed below.
