Written Answers. - Rental Allowances.

Ciarán Cuffe

Question:

762 Mr. Cuffe asked the Minister for Social and Family Affairs the number of people who are in receipt of rental allowance in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Dublin city and the State in the last year for which figures are available. [11412/03]

The supplementary welfare allowance scheme, which is administered on behalf of my Department by the health boards, provides for the payment of rent supplement to eligible persons living in private rented accommodation who are unable to provide for their accommodation costs from their own resources and who do not have accommodation available to them from any other source.

At the end of December 2002 there were 54,213 rent supplements in payment. A breakdown, by county, of this figure is shown in the following tabular statement.
