Vol. 566 No. 2

Written Answers. - Hospital Doctors.

Bernard Allen

Question:

173 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has received a proposal from the Medical Council that medical students should have to register with the council and that this should be included in the Medical Practitioners Act by way of amendment to same; and if he will make a statement on the matter in view of the fact that this would be seen by many as an additional layer of bureaucracy. [12571/03]

I received a number of proposals from the Medical Council last year during the consultation process on the composition of a new Medical Practitioners Act. One of these proposals related to the possible registration of undergraduate medical students. Preparation of heads of Bill for a new Medical Practitioners Act is well advanced, and the statutory provisions in relation to the registration of medical practitioners are among the many issues being carefully examined in this context.
