Vol. 566 No. 2

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Phil Hogan

Question:

184 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when closed circuit television cameras will be provided for Carlow town in view of the recent decision by Carlow Town Council to make a financial contribution to the scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12441/03]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that Carlow is one of 11 locations set to receive new Garda CCTV systems over the next two years – subject to the availability of funds. The other locations are in alphabetical order: Athlone, Ballyfermot, Castlebar, Clondalkin, Clonmel, Ennis, Kilkenny, Sligo, Tallaght and Waterford. The schemes are prioritised into two groups of which Athlone, Clondalkin, Tallaght and Waterford form the first tendering priority and Ballyfermot, Carlow, Castlebar, Clonmel, Ennis, Kilkenny and Sligo form the second tendering priority.

The tender for the first group of four towns is well advanced. It is expected that work on the tender for the second group of seven towns will begin during the second half of 2003. In the case of Carlow and following successful tendering and award of contracts, it could be expected that work would begin on the installation of the system during the second quarter of 2004 at the earliest, subject to the availability of funding.
