Vol. 566 No. 2

Written Answers. - Work Permits.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

52 Ms Shortall asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the pro gress made to date in her Department's investigation of a company (details supplied) which has been inviting Irish meat companies to recruit butchers from Nepal (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12289/03]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to two similar questions, Question No. 165 of 18 February 2003 from Deputy Howlin and No. 147 of 25 March 2003, from Deputy O'Shea. Investigations into allegations made in respect of the particular company remain ongoing. The investigations involve a number of companies.

The employment regulation order or registered employment agreement system, under the Industrial Relations Acts 1946 to 2001, does not regulate terms and conditions of employment for the meat industry. Accordingly, from an employment rights perspective, wage regulation will be in accordance with the provisions of the National Minimum Wage Act 2000.
