Vol. 566 No. 2

Written Answers. - Public Safety.

Kathleen Lynch

Question:

57 Ms Lynch asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the progress which has been made in considering the need for a new authority with overall responsibility for public safety as recommended by the interdepartmental committee; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12283/03]

The interdepartmental and agency review group on public safety has examined the State's approach to public safety. The recommendations of this group included the proposed establishment of an agency to deal specifically with public safety regulation. The current situation is that the regulation of public safety is currently being dealt with by a number of Government Departments and public bodies. The situation requires careful consideration and it may well be that the issues involved require some form of a more co-ordinated approach, rather than the establishment of a brand new agency.
