Vol. 566 No. 2

Written Answers. - EU Constitution.

Denis Naughten

Question:

112 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs his views on the claims that the proposed EU Constitution could threaten Irish statute law and the Constitution in relation to abortion and euthanasia; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12504/03]

No basis exists for these claims. The European Union has no competence whatsoever in the areas of abortion or euthanasia and there has been no proposal in the convention to change this situation in any way in the new constitutional treaty. These matters will continue to be for purely national decision.
