Following the introduction in 1999 of special funding under the rural towns and villages initiative to support the provision of new water services infrastructure to promote development of rural towns and villages and to combat rural depopulation, the Buttevant sewerage scheme was approved for funding in my Department's Water Services Investment Pro gramme 2000-2002, published in July 2000, at an initial estimated cost of €1.9 million.
The approved cost of the scheme was increased to €4.6 million in the Water Services Investment Programme 2002-2004, published in April 2002, to reflect the scope of the works approved by my Department in May 2001. These included a new wastewater treatment plant and associated works, and sewer extensions on the Doneraile Road to service new housing development, if required. The advancement of the scheme is a matter for Cork County Council. No claims for recoupment of expenditure have yet been received by my Department from the council.
