Vol. 566 No. 4

Written Answers. - Environmental Policy.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

199 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the extent to which his Department has ongoing discussions with Coillte Teoranta, with a view to maximising tree species that are ozone friendly; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13166/03]

The national climate change strategy identifies the key role for forestry in terms of meeting Ireland's commitments under the Kyoto Protocol. I am satisfied that Coillte Teoranta are aware of the potential contribution of forestry. I would remind the Deputy that Coillte Teoranta has achieved Forest Stewardship Council, FSC, which is evidence that it is managing its forests in a manner which is compatible with environmental, social and economic considerations.

Richard Bruton

Question:

200 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if he has received the consultants' report on the environmental impact statement submitted by Dublin Port in respect of their proposal to fill in 52 acres of Dublin Bay; when it was received; the main findings of same; and the action he proposes to take following the receipt of the report. [13205/03]

The environmental impact statement submitted by the Dublin Port Company has been examined within my Department and by consultants engaged by my Department. Arising from this examination certain issues were raised with the port company.

The company has now responded with its views and thoss of its consultants. A meeting is likely to take place within the next two to three weeks to discuss the various issues. Decisions on the further action to be taken in respect of the application will be made in the light of these discussions.
