Vol. 567 No. 5

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Denis Naughten

Question:

363 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Transport the results of the DRL pilot project in the greater Dublin area; the period for which the project was run; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14691/03]

I refer to the reply to Question No. 593 of 7 May 2003. The position is unchanged. I understand the Dublin area project was run from 17 July to 30 September 2002.

Question:

364 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Transport if he will ban the use of bull-bars on vehicles; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14692/03]

Under Directive 74/483, bull bars and other exterior projections to motor vehicles are covered by an EU-wide type approval arrangement. Provided a manufacturer has obtained type approval under this arrangement, it is not open to a member state to take action at national level to prohibit the sale or fitment of bull bars. New proposals for a type approval directive with regard to the protection of pedestrians and other vulnerable road users in the event of collision with a motor vehicle have been introduced by the European Commission which will, inter alia, review the present arrangements relating to bull bars.

Ireland will support strongly the introduction of new vehicle safety measures at EU level and will move to implement them without delay.
