Vol. 567 No. 5

Written Answers. - Prison Committals.

Joe Costello

Question:

374 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the case of a person (details supplied) who is serving a sentence for murder in prison in England; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14262/03]

A barrister based in England sent a representation to this Department in January 2001 regarding the offender concerned. The representation served as an expression of interest on behalf of the offender to transfer to this jurisdiction to serve the remainder of his sentence here, under the Council of Europe Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons. Officials of my Department replied to this letter and wrote to Her Majesty's Prison Service headquarters, requesting them to commence processing an application for transfer from the offender concerned. HM Prison Service have subsequently informed my officials that the offender has since withdrawn his application for transfer. Any other issues relating to the offender's detention in the United Kingdom are a matter for my colleague, the Minister for Foreign Affairs.
