Vol. 567 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Billy Timmins

Question:

395 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the position regarding a person (details supplied) in County Wicklow who is interested in applying to the Garda Síochána; the measures this person needs to take to be considered eligible; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14605/03]

The Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations 1988, as amended, govern entry to the Garda Síochána. Such regulations, inter alia, prescribe the educational qualifications required for entry to the force and provide for the acceptance of other qualifications which are not of a lower standard than those prescribed.

The qualifications of an applicant to the Garda Síochána who was educated in England are considered equivalent to those specified under the admissions and appointments regulations provided the applicant has obtained a grade not lower than C in at least five subjects in the GCSE examination and that these subjects include English, Irish and mathematics.
