Vol. 567 No. 5

Written Answers. - Conservation of Works of Art.

John McGuinness

Question:

412 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on whether the Ormonde tapestries at Kilkenny Castle are in serious need of restoration if they are to survive in situ; the number and origins of the tapestries in storage at the Dúchas depot in Kilkenny; his views on the condition of each tapestry; if they are being stored in a way to protect their state of repair; if arrangements will be made to hang these tapestries; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14596/03]

There are a number of tapestries on display in Kilkenny Castle, all of which form part of the Ormonde collection of pictures and tapestries. Space within the castle which is appropriate for display of tapestries is limited and of the six tapestries comprising the Decius suite, five are on display in the castle while the sixth is in storage at the Kilkenny national monuments depot. Of the three tapestries comprising the Elements suite, two are on display and one is in storage.

All tapestries, including the two in storage, were examined and surface-cleaned about ten years ago and minor mending was carried out where necessary; they are considered to be in good condition. The two in storage have been wrapped in accordance with best conservation practice to protect them.
