Vol. 567 No. 5

Written Answers. - Harbours and Piers.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

130 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs the position regarding the shelter harbour scheme on Inis Mean; when he expects it to be in operation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14491/03]

Earlier this year, I approved a grant of €148,225, 100% of the cost, to Galway County Council to employ consultants to prepare applications for both a foreshore licence and planning permission and to prepare an environmental impact statement in respect of the development of sheltered harbour facilities at Caladh Mór on Inis Mean.

It is expected that this stage in the preparatory work for the project will be completed within the next 12 months. On its completion, I will be in a position to evaluate the case for progression of the project to the design phase in the context of the funding available to me for island development and the various other demands on that funding.
