Vol. 567 No. 6

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

170 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science when extra resources will be allocated to St. Augustine's School, Limerick, which were recommended in the context of a High Court order that a person be placed in the school with the required resources; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that this person has been diagnosed as having ADHD and is excluded from the school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14793/03]

Additional resources in the form of a teacher, a special needs assistant and appropriate training for both were allocated to St Augustine's Youth Encounter project in Limerick to facilitate the placement of a boy whose needs were the subject of High Court proceedings in late 2001. I understand that because of difficulty with this boy's placement he is suspended from school since the beginning of April 2003. I understand it is the intention of the school authorities to re-integrate the boy back into St Augustine's Youth Encounter project.

I am aware that the school has sought additional resources including accommodation to enable them to cater more effectively for their current and expected enrolments. I have asked my Department to deal urgently with the request and to liaise directly with the school over the coming weeks.

Tony Gregory

Question:

171 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science when the application of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 7 made at the beginning of 2003 for a home tuition grant for their autistic child will be responded to. [14794/03]

The application for a home tuition grant for the child in question is currently being considered by my Department and a decision will be conveyed to the parent within the next few days.
