Vol. 567 No. 6

Written Answers. - National Conference Centre.

Jack Wall

Question:

193 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism the position in regard to the provision of a national conference centre, in view of the importance of such a facility for the tourist industry; if there is a time scale in regard to its provision; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14913/03]

As I informed the House on 16 April last, I believe that a dedicated national conference centre would be a desirable addition to our international conference infrastructure. Proposals as to how the national conference centre project might best be progressed are being finalised by my Department. I am sure the Deputy will appreciate that a project of this scale, complexity and cost requires very detailed and careful examination with the result that the consultation process with other Departments is not yet completed. However, it remains my intention to bring the matter to Government as soon as possible.

In the meantime, I am assured that Bord Fáilte, in conjunction with the Convention Bureau of Ireland, is continuing to work closely with its industry partners to optimise Ireland's share of the international conference market.
