Vol. 567 No. 6

Written Answers. - Proposed Legislation.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

206 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason it is not proposed to protect the title of physical therapist in upcoming legislation in view of the fact that this is the recognised international name of physiotherapist. [14955/03]

Action 105 of the health strategy commits my Department to strengthening and expanding provisions for statutory registration of health professionals. In this context, legislation is currently being prepared to establish a system of statutory registration for health and social care professionals.

A decision has not been made as to what titles will be protected under the legislation. In drafting the legislation, further advice and examination will be required of the many complex legal, competition and public interest issues that arise, including in relation to protection of title.
