Vol. 567 No. 6

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Paddy McHugh

Question:

209 Mr. McHugh asked the Minister for Transport his proposals to review the speed limits on roads, particularly in relation to increasing speed limits on national routes in view of the fact that the penalty points system has resulted in a dramatic reduction in speeding on routes which are capable of accommodating higher speeds safely. [14803/03]

A comprehensive review of speed limits is currently under way. The review will address all of the major issues relating to speed limit policy including the range of speed limits deployed on roadways and in relation to particular categories of vehicles, the signage used to indicate speed limits and the implications of the adoption of metric values for speed measurement. A broadly-based working group has been established to carry out this review and it is intended that the review will be completed this summer.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

210 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Transport if his Department provides the funds to take remedial action at various accident blackspots throughout the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14817/03]

The funding of remedial measures at accident blackspots on the national road network is a matter for the National Roads Authority, NRA, and local authorities concerned.

As the Deputy will be aware, my Department provides an annual block grant to the NRA, which is responsible for allocating funding to local authorities in respect of projects on national roads.

The scheduling of any necessary remedial works at accident blackspot locations is a matter for the NRA, together with relevant local authorities, in the context of available resources under the NRA's remedial measures programme. I have asked the NRA to forward the Deputy further details of these remedial works.
