Vol. 567 No. 6

Written Answers. - Recreational Facilities.

Jack Wall

Question:

217 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on the urgent need to incorporate sporting, leisure and amenity facilities in all residential housing estates; the plans his Department has in relation to this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14829/03]

Section 10(2)(j) of the Planning and Development Act 2000 provides that each planning authority must include objectives in its development plan for the preservation, improvement and extension of amenities and recreational amenities. In deciding individual applications for permission, planning authorities may require the provision of such amenities where appropriate in developments.

I consider that this recently updated measure provides an appropriate framework to facilitate, and as necessary require, the incorporation of suitable amenities in housing developments.
